If you're looking to install a deck it is important that you plan in advance. Here are a few guidelines as to how you can effectively measure and plan your decking.

There are many reasons why you want to install  decking in your garden. You may want to have a space where you can relax and enjoy your garden, or add an additional area where you can entertain friends and family. 

Regardless of the reason, effective planning is essential. You should start by measuring the area where you want to install your decking.

Be sure to leave enough room around your decking area to move in, and not to install your decking too close to other obstacles. 

First, start by designing your decking and this can be done with a variety of computer programs. If you are completely new to this, stick to a simple shape like a rectangle. 

Next you should lay out your decking where it will be built on the ground. Make sure that the corners or square to the house and you can use a piece of string from the house you a few feet farthest from the end of your data. You can use this to make the relevant markings to ensure that everything is level.

Next you should look at the posts - remember they are never located at the edge of the decking, but a little apart from the outside edge. 

Now you are ready for the footings to be done. Keep in mind that each footing should rest below the frost line, which can vary depending on the area you live in.
